Promoting young talent with StudiumPlus

TLT-Turbo in Bad Hersfeld places emphasis on dual study program

Bad Hersfeld. Three generations of StudiumPlus – This is what you will find at TLT-Turbo, one of the world’s leading suppliers of technologically advanced industrial fans and ventilation systems, at the company location Bad Hersfeld. Roman Lenk, Head of Logistics, is a StudiumPlus graduate in Management and Logistics, and both he and the company are very impressed with the StudiumPlus program. Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf, both StudiumPlus graduates, work with Lenk in the company’s logistics department. Roman Lenk is convinced: “With the dual study program, we can develop specialists who will stay with the company in the long term.”

Lenk himself is the best proof of this: in 2013, he started his bachelor’s degree at the partner company TLT-Turbo in Bad Hersfeld as the company’s first dual student. After completing his studies, he stayed with the company and in 2020 took over as head of the logistics department with 21 employees. “If I hadn’t already gotten to know the company so well during my studies, I wouldn’t have been able to take on this position so quickly,” Lenk says.

As one of its tasks is to promote young talent, TLT-Turbo has sent Milena Fladung, the next student, to the Bad Hersfeld campus. The 21-year-old was intensively supervised by Lenk during her project phases in the company, graduated as best of her year and has now taken over the process and project management for the logistics department. She is also the process owner for a new IFS implementation, “a very important interface”, as Lenk points out. Alea Wolf also sits in the office with the two of them. The 22-year-old is now in her fourth semester of studying Logistics Management and is once again being mentored by Ms Fladung.

“This is a good example of how a company can work together with StudiumPlus over a longer period of time to specifically develop junior staff,” Campus Director Prof. Dr. Fabian Tjon says. It is not important to send students every year, but to send them when you need a specialist or manager in your company.

Roman Lenk agrees: “We don’t train en masse, but in a very targeted way, and during the project phases we look to see which area the student is best suited for.” Offering prospects and a future in the company is one of the key factors in retaining young talent. The large network of StudiumPlus, with around 1,000 partner companies, is also of interest to TLT-Turbo, even if it does not send students every year. “In addition, the cooperation with StudiumPlus and thus with the is very positive for the company’s image,” he is convinced.

Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf both appreciate the fact that the company had a precise plan for their practical phases – and that they got to know it from the ground up. “I started in the warehouse, got to know the employees and quickly felt part of the team,” Wolf says. Now she appreciates the fact that she can not only continue to accompany her practical projects, but also work on other projects to get to know as many aspects as possible – and that her projects, such as reducing packaging costs, are of great importance to the company. For Roman Lenk, it is essential that the students take on tasks that are actually implemented.

“Many companies don’t take the time to invest in young talent,” Lenk says. At the same time, it is in their own hands to promote young talent in a very targeted way. TLT-Turbo employs StudiumPlus graduates not only in logistics but also in construction. Milena Fladung and Alea Wolf are also enthusiastic about the dual study program. That’s why they both act as school ambassadors. They visit schools to inform them about the opportunities offered by dual study.

TLT-Turbo to Exhibit at Cheese Con 2023

TLT-Turbo will be representing the next generation of dairy industry equipment at the 2023 Cheese Con, Co-hosted by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association and the Centre for Dairy Research. The event takes place from 4 – 6 April 2023 at the Alliant Energy Centre in Madison, Wisconsin.

Cheese Con is an annual event attracting over 3,000 dairy industry leaders, suppliers, and marketers who come together to share information about the latest in cheese technology, workforce, whey opportunities, product safety, marketing and dairy exports. The Conference will feature impactful seminars, networking events, and its largest-ever tabletop exhibition hall, featuring the industry’s most trusted supplier partners – under the banner of this year’s theme: Global Ideas for Dairy Processors.

“CheeseCon is the only event that combines CDR’s world-class technical expertise, a 75,000-square-foot exhibit hall, and ample opportunities for connection – all with a unique focus on dairy processing,” says WCMA Events Director Judy Keller.

TLT-Turbo representatives Jon Hampshire, John Landis, and Mario Schmidt will be attending the event and are looking forward to showcasing TLT-Turbo’s range for Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR).

TLT-Turbo’s exhibition will focus on the MVR fan range. According to Mario Schmidt, Head of the MVR Fans business segment, the features of TLT-Turbo’s MVR fan, such as the lower maintenance requirements and the introduction of hybrid ceramic bearings, will definitely attract the attention of dairy operations.

The implementation of hybrid ceramic bearings is a key differentiator of the TLT-Turbo MVR fan. The hybrid ceramic bearings used in TLT-Turbo MVR fans are life time greased and can be operated for up to 10 years without requiring maintenance. To enhance this benefit for clients, TLT-Turbo introduced an additional device to the fan’s design that allows for the bearing to be re-greased from the outside to further simplify maintenance and to increase the fans’ service life.

The fact that the TLT-Turbo MVR fans do not require an oil change is highly valuable to operators in the dairy, food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries. “In a clean environment, not having to introduce chemicals such as oil to the environment when maintaining crucial equipment is highly valuable. In addition, this makes our fans kinder to the environment as well. Other fans on the market consumer around 40 to 60 litres of oil per year whereas our fans consume 60 to 120 litres over a ten-year period,” explains Schmidt.

High motor speeds, a wide range of optimized impellers and the allowance for high temperature and pressure increases complement the lifetime greased hybrid ceramic bearings to ensure that clients benefit from the enhanced performance and efficiency that they have come to expect from TLT-Turbo products. These factors allow for operation of the fan below critical speed which ensures both reliability and safe operation.

TT-Turbo’s MVR offering has been expanded to include low-flow and medium-flow ranges. The medium and low flow MVR ranges both offer the same technical features and benefits, however the key differences are that low flow range is characterized by having a significantly smaller and more compact size while still delivering higher efficiencies while the medium range fans are able to handle larger mass flows at high efficiencies.

TLT-Turbo’s exhibition is located at Stand 1222. Media and visitors are invited to the stand for comments and information on TLT-Turbo, current MVR and dairy industry ventilation trends and event feedback. Jon Hampshire, John Landis, and Mario Schmidt will be present to answer all questions.

TLT-Turbo and Mosen paper on the new MoJet® Fan presented at the 2022 Tunnel Safety and Ventilation Conference

Mosen’s Fathi Tarada, presented a paper at the annual Tunnel Safety and Ventilation Conference in Graz, Austria. The paper, which Tarada co-authored with Mosen’s Pier Bertacche and Product Manager of the Tunnel & Metro Business Segment at TLT-Turbo, Lars Lehmann, was titled: “Measurements and CFD Calculations with a MoJet and Conventional Fan”.

The three-day conference event was well attended with industry experts able to meet face to face after the conference’s four year hiatus.

TLT-Turbo and Mosen also exhibited at the event, with a MoJet® fan model on display, providing an opportunity to engage with interested colleagues in the industry as well as prospective customers. The display model provided visitors with a chance to see the technical details of the MoJet®, to find out how the special nozzle geometry redirects the air jet away from the tunnel ceiling. Visitors were also able to appreciate the MoJet’s® scale. Being the same height as a conventional Jet Fan, it provides a distinct advantage over the ‘slanted’ silencer design.

Along with Tarada and Lehmann, TLT-Turbo tunnel ventilation experts, Till Weishaar and Sander Wirth were in attendance to provide insight into the ways in which the MoJet® is redefining tunnel ventilation.
